Standoff at Durham home ends with arrest
The standoff began Sunday evening when a woman told police her boyfriend had shot her during a fight. It ended shortly after midnight when police tear gassed a Guthrie Avenue home and took a 49-year-old man into custody.
Posted — UpdatedInvestigators said the incident began as a domestic dispute when a woman called 911 around 5:30 p.m., saying that her boyfriend had shot at her during a fight. Her hand was cut during the altercation, police said.
Officers said that when they arrived at 500 N. Guthrie Ave., Donald Arthur Simmons, 49, ran into the house. He refused to come out, so the Durham Police Selective Enforcement Team was called out.
The woman and her child managed to get out of the house safely, police said.
Around 12:30 a.m., officers threw tear gas into the house, entered it and took Simmons into custody.
He was transported to Duke University Medical Center for observation from the intake of tear gas, but police said he had no major injuries.
Once Simmons is released from the hospital, police plan to charge him with kidnapping, assault and related offenses.
