Spring Lake goes to four-day work week

Posted January 4, 2009

— Starting Monday, Spring Lake in Cumberland County will switch town employees to a four-day work week.

Town Hall will now be open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The office is closed on Fridays.

Officials said they switched to the schedule to save money.

Wayne County went to a four-day work week earlier this year and Durham County is experimenting with the idea.

Folks will be working 4 10-hour days, so they will work the same amount of hours. And it is not just the power bill they will be saving on. Think of all the town vehicles that will not be driven for that extra day.

The move to 4 day work weeks was being experimented when gasoline was over $4.00 a gallon.

Maybe they are reducing pay/salary to 4-day weeks, too. That would save money. If I worked for the town and they did that, I'd have a fit!!! I agree that just saving electricity, water, etc. isn't saving enough money to justify the inconvenience to the public.

unless I'm just don't get it, how can going to 10 hour days save any $$ The electricity saved for not having the lights on for just Friday's can't be that much, can it?
