SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Southern Pines police said Wednesday that a 14-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the theft of a car belonging to a food delivery driver whose 1-year-old son was in the car when the theft occurred.

The teen, who lives in Southern Pines but whose identity was not released because of his age, has been charged with first-degree kidnapping and theft of a motor vehicle, police said in a written statement.

The boy was found in Aberdeen although the circumstances of his arrest were not immediately publicly disclosed.

The woman, 26, was working for DoorDash Food Delivery when she left her vehicle running and the door unlocked as she went to the customer's unit to drop off his meal.

She told police that there was a large group of people in the area when she arrived to make the delivery.

While she was making the delivery, the teen jumped in her car and sped away, police said.

The customer who ordered the meal told WRAL News that he witnessed the incident and then drove around in his car to find the thief.

Police said the woman's parked vehicle was found at 10:15 p.m. on South Gaines Street with the driver's toddler son inside and unhurt.
