Some activities off limits at Lake Wheeler due to high bacteria

Posted June 25, 2014

— Officials are advising the public to limit some recreational activities at Lake Wheeler Park because of high bacteria levels in the water.

The City of Raleigh already prohibits swimming at park, and officials said water skiing and tubing are also off limits.

Fishing, sailing, kayaking, rowing and other activities that do not involve submersion are permitted.

Time for a good old boat race. Those racing hydoplanes sure do a good job of aeration of the lake.

There is nothing clean or beautiful about this area of the state. It's a pit.

Been waiting for this. It's a small lake, and the heat rising makes the water temp rise, thereby creating a favorable environment for bacteria to grow.

And after the sewage spills from Cary upstream a year or two ago, there's plenty of bacteria in Lake Wheeler to grow.

It's ok to catch a fish from the lake. Just don't eat it.
