FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police said Friday that they have charged a Fort Bragg soldier with fatally shooting his girlfriend in May.

Stephanie Thompson, 24, was killed in the May 12 shooting at the Summertime Apartments, at 6539 Jeffrey Drive. Michael Lloyd Williams, 47, was wounded in the incident and has been recuperating at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Police said they charged Williams with first-degree murder after he was released from the hospital. Investigators determined that he shot Thompson several times before shooting himself in the head.

Williams, who was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, had been romantically involved with Thompson for seven years, police said.
