Smithfield woman, 35, killed in Johnston County wreck

A 35-year-old Smithfield woman died late Friday in a single-car wreck south of Selma, state Highway Patrol officials confirmed Saturday.

CLAYTON, N.C. — A 35-year-old Smithfield woman died late Friday in a single-car wreck south of Selma, state Highway Patrol officials confirmed Saturday. 

According to investigators, Brooklyn Michelle Howard was traveling southbound on Peedin Road, near N.C. Highway 70, when she lost control of her car at about 11:45 p.m. 

The car ran off the road, into a ditch and rolled over, troopers said. Investigators said Howard was distracted by the GPS on her cell phone when she lost control of the car. 

No other information about the wreck was released.

The crash remains under investigation.
