SANFORD, N.C. — A sump pump exploded Friday afternoon at a perfume manufacturing plant in Sanford, sparking a small fire and minor explosion forcing employees to evacuate the building.

A contractor working inside the Coty plant at 1400 Broadway Road reported a flash just before 3 p.m., Sanford Fire Department Battalion Commander Scott Knuth said.

No one was injured and the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, Knuth said.

Company officials said they are investigating what caused the incident.
