Sinkhole diverts traffic in east Raleigh

A sinkhole opened up a gap of about three feet across Wednesday afternoon along Poole Road in east Raleigh.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A sinkhole opened up a gap of about three feet across Wednesday afternoon along a busy east Raleigh commuter route. 

Poole Road was closed just north of the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard right after 5 p.m.

Police were diverting drivers around the sinkhole and asked that those who can avoid the area.

Utility crews will be working to fix the sinkhole Thursday, but authorities said traffic will continue to be impacted through the morning commute.
