DURHAM, N.C. — An 84-year-old man who is believed to be suffering from dementia or some other cognitive impairment was found safe Saturday after a Silver Alert was issued to find him.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for Robert Owen Williams, of Durham, at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

He had not been seen since Tuesday.

The alert was canceled shortly before 4:45 p.m.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
