FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — One person was shot and killed near the Cumberland County Courthouse Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. near the intersection of Person and Cool Spring streets after the driver of a silver Chevrolet Impala, identified as Paul Chappell, 25, was confronted by someone he knew, Fayetteville police said. Chappell was shot while inside the vehicle, then drove a short distance before crashing into a parked vehicle inside a parking lot at 235 Person Street, police said.

Chappell was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he later died.

A suspect was taken into custody outside the courthouse, authorities said. That person's information was not immediately released.

Investigators believe the shooting may have been a domestic incident.

A baby in the vehicle was not injured.
