KITTRELL, N.C.EDITOR'S NOTE: A court determined that, although the child fired the shot that killed his grandfather, "there is no question that (he) was not the aggressor at all in this incident." All charges against him were dismissed in April 2016.

Vance County sheriff’s investigators said a family argument that turned deadly Monday night began when an 84-year-old man shot and wounded his 49-year-old son. The elderly man was then shot to death by his 11-year-old grandson, deputies said.

Deputies were called to a home at 430 Cricket Creek Lane in Kittrell about 7 p.m. They discovered the homeowner, 84-year-old Lloyd Woodlief, had been shot once with a 12-gauge shotgun. He died a short time later.

Deputies also found the man's son, Lloyd Peyton Woodlief, 49, of Henderson, had been shot with a .22-caliber long pistol. He was taken to Duke Medical Center.

Deputies later determined the elder Woodlief was shot by his grandson.
