Shearon Harris to test sirens
The public alert notification sirens around the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant will be tested from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Posted — UpdatedA spokeswoman for Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant says the 83 alert-notification sirens within 10 miles of the facility will be tested from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Sept. 22. Each siren will run at full-volume for approximately 3 minutes.
The annual test is conducted in cooperation with the state of North Carolina as well as Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Wake counties. It's purpose is to make sure each siren works properly.
Progress Energy also conducts silent tests on the sirens every two weeks, as well full-volume tests at shorter durations every three months.
Residents with questions about the tests can contact their county or state emergency management agencies or call the Harris Plant at 919-362-3261.
