ENFIELD, N.C. — A Rocky Mount man who claimed to be a preacher was cited for marijuana possession during a traffic stop in Enfield Friday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Dhreher Bozard stopped a vehicle on U.S. Highway 301 after seeing it cross the center line, authorities said. Bozard smelled marijuana inside the vehicle and questioned the driver, Michael Thompson.

Authorities said that Thompson, 49, handed over a bag containing 23 grams of marijuana and some cigars. Thompson told Bozrd that he is a preacher and buys marijuana every two months to smoke, not sell.

Thompson was cited for possession of more than a half-ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. His first court date was set for Oct. 26.
