Security guard killed in fight at Wayne County nightclub

Around 11 p.m., deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department responded to a disturbance at Maynard's Night Club, located at 5404 NC Highway 55.

Upon their arrival, responders discovered that five people had started a fight with another person inside the club on the second floor. Security personnel at the club started escorting the five outside, officials said, but two men from the group began fighting back.

Outside the club, one security guard, 49-year-old Michael Ray Brinkley, of Kinston, was assaulted by the two men, who fled the scene. Patrons at the club, some of whom were nurses, started administering CPR and called 911 when they saw Brinkley lying on the ground unresponsive, officials said, but he was pronounced dead when emergency responders arrived.

Brinkley's brother-in-law said he had a day job buying cars for an auto parts company and worked at Maynard's on Saturday nights to earn extra money.

Brinkley had two daughters- one who is a teenager and another who is in her twenties.

"One of the rare places that you could find people of all ages could come and dance and that's what you don't see no more, a good dance hall," said regular visitor Laura Connie. "It's a great family place and it's sad that two people could destroy that in one night."

Witnesses at the scene described the suspects to detectives, who located them later at 2081 Old Grantham Road.

After further investigation and several interviews following the incident, 32-year-old Jerry Wayne Anthony Chandler and 27-year-old Dustin Steve Kirk, both from Goldsboro, were each charged with one count of murder and placed in the Wayne County Detention Center under no bond.
