BUNN, N.C. — Authorities were called to Lake Royale Saturday evening to investigate a possible drowning after witnesses said a boy disappeared underwater, police said.

Lake Royale police chief Jarrett Umstead said the boy, who is between 10 and 13, was seen throwing a ball around in the lake, near Bunn in Franklin County, shortly before 7 p.m. Witnesses thought he went underwater and didn't resurface.

Dive teams and crews using sonar equipment searched until midnight Saturday and again for several hours Sunday morning, but didn't find anything.

Police said they haven't gotten any missing persons reports from parents in the area.

The search has been halted unless authorities get more information that indicates there actually is a missing person, Umstead said.
