Scattered showers possible Sunday

Rain showers and an occasional thunderstorms are possible overnight as a front continues to linger across central North Carolina, WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said.

"Some areas could end up with locally heavy rain, and others could not see a drop," she said. "The rain will most likely stay south of the Triangle."

A flood watch is in effect for Cumberland, Hoke, Sampson and Wayne counties until 5 a.m. Sunday.

"Sunday will be cooler, and much of the area will be cloudy as our area of rain shifts southward a bit more," Wilmoth said. "We've got a smaller chance of measurable rain Sunday, but scattered sprinkles and showers are possible."

Highs on Sunday will be in the low 70s, about 10 degrees below normal for mid-September.

Highs on Monday will be in the mid to upper 70s. Tuesday will still have a chance of a shower or storm, but clouds will give way to some sun and highs will reach into the upper 70s.

Nice weather will move in for the rest of the work week with mostly to partly sunny skies expected Wednesday through Friday. Highs will stay in the 70s.
