CARTHAGE, N.C. — A Sanford man was charged Friday with embezzling more than $330,000 from a Moore County real estate office over a six-year period, authorities said.

Kirk Lester Strause, 51, of 199 Coopers Corner Lane, was charged with felony embezzlement greater than $100,000, felony forgery of endorsement, felony uttering of a forged endorsement and obtaining property by false pretense greater than $100,000. He was being held in the Moore County jail under a $100,000 bond.

An executive with Primax Properties in Pinehurst last week asked the Moore County Sheriff's Office to investigate after a review of the company's financial accounts showed unauthorized expenditures, authorities said. An investigation showed that a Primax employee had misappropriated $331,252 since June 2006.
