Sanford bank robbery suspect caught after collision

SANFORD, N.C. — Police said the man who robbed a Sanford bank Tuesday wrecked himself into an arrest.

Joseph Michael Dixon III, 32, of 6981 Sheriff Watson Road in Sanford, led police on a brief, high-speed chase on Academy Street before he wrecked. 

Witnesses told police a man wearing a werewolf mask walked into Capital Bank, at 2800 Williams St., handed a teller a note demanding money, then left in a blue sedan.

Police charged Dixon with one count of common law robbery and one count of felony speeding to elude arrest. He could face other driving violations as well. He was jailed in Lee County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.
