WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A gas line rupture forced the evacuation of Wake Forest Town Hall, the Wake Forest Police Department and several nearby businesses Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A private construction company performing work along Taylor Street accidentally hit the main at about 2 p.m., officials said.

The Wake Forest police and fire departments blocked off Elm Avenue, South Brooks Street and other surrounding streets while crews worked to repair the damage.

After officials initially said that Town Hall would remain closed for the rest of the day Wednesday, they reopened the area to town employees and business owners by 3:30 p.m.
