— The police chief in Rocky Mount is turning in his badge after 32 years in law enforcement, a city official said Monday.

John H. Manley Jr. plans to retire July 1. He was with the Rocky Mount police department for 27 years and has served as chief of police since December 2004.

City Manager Charles W. Penny praised Manley's "dedication and visionary leadership" in a news release announcing his decision to retire.

Manley plans to spend his retirement with family and friends, traveling and continuing his volunteer work with organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and United Community Ministries, the release stated.

As a former citizen of Rocky Mount, I can say I'm now afraid to drive through many areas of town that were safe. Something is wrong and you would agree if you examined the crime statistics.

I am glad that people wish him well, I guess I even wish him well, as long as he just goes away. If you lived in Rocky Mount before he was the chief and while he was the chief you may understand our grief. I live in Nash County where we went from very little crime to plenty of crime. He has done nothing as chief to protect the citizens of Rocky Mount(Nash County)! I live here and that is my opinion, if you live here and you like him, good for you. I live here and I do not like him or anything he has done and again I say Good Riddance. I am allowed to have my own opinion, yes? Just because you do a job for how many ever years does not make you GOOD AT IT!

I love people who are the "experts" on everything. I don't know this Chief, but anyone who works that job for 32 years deserves a great retirement. For those who think it is so easy....why aren't you doing it? For those who think retirement at 51 after 32 years is not sufficient, then look to the national statistics on LEO's and retirement. Most die within 5 years of retirement due to the excessive stress of that job. Work 32, live maybe 5 or so years drawing the retirement....not really such a great deal. Yeah, some live longer, but that is the national average whereas the general public that retires even at 60 or 65 live 10-20 years or more after they retire.

Wishing him well no matter what on his retirement.

Manley was a good officer! But he didn't work his way to the top like most people are saying. He took some short cuts and had a little help from his college buddy now City Manager Charles Penney. Again I will say he was a good officer but as Chief he failed !

I can see how that's possible when a man got out of his bed for 27yrs to protect the citizens of Rocky Mount working his way from police officer to chief.

Leave the man alone. It's always nice to be on the outside looking in and judge how we can do a better job until we are faced with it. I guess all of the problems of Rocky Mount are his fault. Chief Manley single handedly ruined the wonderful city of Rocky Mount.
