Roanoke Rapids man arrested after chase

Authorities responding to a stolen vehicle call in Roanoke Rapids said they spotted Leon Lemont Hunter driving a car matching the stolen vehicle's description. A sheriff's deputy tried to stop the car, but a chase ensued, police said.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids man who led police on a chase down Morgan Drive was arrested Tuesday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities responding to a stolen vehicle call in Roanoke Rapids said they spotted Leon Lemont Hunter driving a car matching the stolen vehicle's description. A sheriff's deputy tried to stop the car, but a chase ensued, police said.

The car wrecked on Morgan Drive and Hunter tried to flee on foot, authorities said. He was arrested a short time later on West 10th Street.

Hunter was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, damage to property, larceny, possession of stolen goods, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, resisting a police officer and possession of marijuana.

He is being held in the Halifax County jail under a $15,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court March 6.
