SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Ten residents have returned to an assisted living center in Smithfield that state and county inspectors had cited for a mouse and roach infestation.

Autumn Wind Assisted Living, at 4302 N.C. Highway 210, has had problems with mice and cockroaches for several years, according to inspectors, but officials told owner Ade Ganiyu on Feb. 1 that the building, which dates to the 1920s, needed more extensive fumigation.

Ganiyu voluntarily agreed to move most of the residents to another assisted living center he owns in Kinston, and some went home with their families.

Exterminators visited Autumn Wind daily for two weeks, and Ganiyu brought in crews to repair some structural problems and clear a backed-up septic line, according to county officials.

Inspectors plan to continue checking on the facility weekly to ensure the problems don't recur.

Seven residents decided to remain at the Kinston facility or with their families.
