Remains of missing Charlotte teacher, Garner native identified

Her boyfriend, Angelo Grayson Smith Jr., who has been charged with her murder, is being held in jail without bond after his first court appearance Monday.

Monday's court hearing lasted less than two minutes. Smith had little to say.

Smith was initially identified as a person of interest in the case after he told authorities a drunken Tanner left their home following an argument and never returned. She was last seen June 8.

According to search warrants, police found evidence of blood in the home, and Tanner's son told detectives that Smith "hurt mommy in the face."

Smith was recently extradited to Charlotte from Chicago, where U.S. marshals arrested him on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. The charge involves Tanner's 3-year-old son, although details of the allegation are unclear.

Police detectives, firefighters and K-9 units conducted a search early Thursday in the 10400 block of Calico Crossing Lane in Charlotte, where they discovered Tanner's remains.

Police said they determined the search location based on information gathered during the investigation.

Tanner grew up in Garner and lived in Greensboro before moving to Charlotte, where she was hired to work on a special project to improve educational opportunities for eight schools.
