Regulatory probe leads to shake-up at Central Prison
An outside regulatory agency is investigating Central Prison, and the probe appears to center on the prison hospital.
Posted — UpdatedA top administrator appears to no longer work at the prison hospital, but the state Department of Public Safety won't comment on that person's status or the nature of the outside investigation.
DPS spokeswoman Pamela Walker said the agency has conducted an internal review that led to the reassignment of some hospital staffers.
"The Department of Public Safety cooperates with inspections, audits or investigations by any regulatory agency. Any regulatory request is taken seriously, and the department is committed to full cooperation and corrective action, if necessary," Walker said in an email to WRAL News.
More than 580 people work in the hospital, which treats inmates from state prisons and county jails across North Carolina who need medical care.
The State Bureau of Investigation, the state Attorney General's Office, the Wake County District Attorney's Office, the North Carolina Medical Board and the North Carolina Board of Nursing all said they were unaware of an investigation. The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to comment.
