HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A registered sex offender ran from Orange County deputies on Thursday as they tried to serve outstanding warrants from Durham County on him, authorities said.

Linwood "Fred" Clay was at the Orange County Courthouse on an unrelated matter at about 11:30 a.m. when deputies tried to take him into custody, authorities said. He drove off in a gold four-door car that was in a nearby parking garage, and authorities said he could have headed to either Durham or Carrboro.

Clay, 26, has a criminal record dating to 2007 that includes convictions for kidnapping, sexual battery and assault with a deadly weapon, according to Department of Public Safety records. Authorities said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff’s Office at 919-245-2900.
