RDU to get stimulus money for runway lights

Posted April 8, 2009

— The Raleigh-Durham International Airport will receive $4.5 million to upgrade the lights on one of its runways, officials said Wednesday.

RDU plans to replace more than 2,000 quartz lights near Terminal 2 with light-emitting diodes, spokeswoman Mindy Hamlin said. LEDs last longer and are more energy-efficient than conventional lights, and Hamlin said they would cut the airport's maintenance and energy costs.

The Federal Aviation Administration received $1.1 billion in stimulus funds to distribute to airports based on a project priority system that addresses airport safety and security, infrastructure, runway safety, increased capacity and mitigation of environmental impacts.

Asheville Regional Airport will receive $7.5 million to improve its terminal, officials said.

"Complain all you want, its being done end of story."

I am really sorry you feel that way. Tell me dhamma, how will this spending of our tax dollars benefit anyone?

    Who is this stimulating?

Good news that it will cut their power bill in half and reduce maintenance by half. (Sorry to half of the bulb maintenance staff who will now lose their jobs.)

Wonder what they'll do with the truck loads of old lights (which seem to be working just fine today)? Need to take this into account when considering the environmental impact of ripping everything out and replacing it with something new.

This amazes me. RDU can well afford to replace the lights without my tax dollars. They make enough money on that parking deck and lots 3 and 4. I am sure they make a lot in rent money as well from the tennants. Just another example of wasted tax dollars.

    Hey cadetsfan,

This is not a safety issue: the runway is ALREADY safe. This is a WASTING BORROWED $$ ISSUE

  • Caveman93 Apr 8, 2009

Please, keep spending our money on as much as possible so when we're all broke and unemployed you won't have anyone working to pay taxes and government will be out of a job. I am all for smaller government and this sounds like a great plan.

Why spend money on lights? We could just make the TSA agents who are always just standing around, to go stand on the side of the runway with flashlights. Put them to some actual use.

  • cadetsfan Apr 8, 2009

uh, I'm all for spending money on safety items like runway lights.

4.5 MILLION dollars for LED runway lights? Now that must really stimulate someones pocket quite well. Sadly, it will be us, the taxpayers, and our children and grand children that will be paying dearly for these lights.... and the entire stimulus package..... plus interest.
