Raleigh police: Man was on purse-stealing, drunken-driving rampage

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Knightdale man is accused of stealing purses from two vehicles, crashing into other vehicles and attempting to run over a police officer while trying to get away in north Raleigh Sunday.

Arrest warrants state that Omar Rodriguez, 30, whose address is listed as "anywhere, Knightdale," broke into two vehicles and took two purses worth $300.

He rammed a pickup truck with four people inside, struck a barricade in the parking lot of a shopping center at 3232 Capital Blvd. and hit another vehicle in a parking lot at 4000 Atlantic Ave., according to warrants. When police stopped him on New Hope Church Road, the warrants stated, he tried to run over an officer.

Police said he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.14 and was driving more than 15 mph over the speed limit on New Hope Church Road.

Rodriguez was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two counts each of hit-and-run and breaking-and-entering a motor vehicle, and one count each of assault with a deadly weapon of an emergency responder, misdemeanor larceny, felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving and resisting a public officer.

He was placed in the Wake County jail under a $71,000 secured bond.
