RALEIGH, N.C. — A hit and run in Raleigh over the weekend might not have been a hit and run after all, police said Sunday evening.

Investigators initially reported Saturday that they were looking for the driver responsible for the death of Richard Christopher Maher, 41, of Knightdale. He was found dead along Capital Boulevard near Interstate 440 around 3:45 a.m. Saturday.

Jim Sughrue, a spokesman for the Raleigh Police Department, said the investigation, however, has led detectives to believe that Maher had actually been lying in the roadway when a car hit him.

The driver of that car remained at the site and spoke with investigators. It was unclear, Sughrue said, why Maher was in the road.

Officers are asking for the public’s help in the investigation, especially from anyone who might have known Maher or know about his activities before he was killed.

Anyone with information can contact Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357.
