RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh City Council has approved the second phase of work to revitalize Hillsborough Street, including the addition of a raised median, marked bike lanes and some on-street parking along a half-mile stretch of the busy road.

The work will take place between Gardner Street and the intersection of Rosemary and Shepherd streets, along the northern edge of the North Carolina State University campus.

A four-foot raised median in the center of the road, wider sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions will be designed to improve safety. Three new single-lane roundabouts will be added at the intersections of Rosemary and Sheperd streets, Dixie Trail and Friendly Drive, and Brooks Avenue.

Dan Allen Drive will become a right-in, right-out street with a westbound left-turn lane, officials said.

Design plans on the $12.9 million project are about 65 percent complete. A contract will likely be awarded for the work in 2016, and the project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2017.

New LED lighting will also be installed to save energy and reduce maintenance costs.
