Raleigh man accused of rape

A Raleigh man made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon on charges of raping a woman.

Colonel Mack Woods, 25, of 1404-M Steinbeck Drive, was arrested Tuesday on charges of second-degree rape, first-degree burglary and larceny after breaking and entering.

Arrest warrants allege that Woods broke into the woman's home in the early hours of Nov. 17, forced himself on her and left with $200.

A neighbor called 911 at 4:44 a.m. reporting that the woman was "screaming hysterically" and said someone had raped her.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Woods and the victim "were familiar with one another but not personally acquainted."

Woods' mother, who did not want to be identified, said after Wednesday's court appearance that the charges he faces are out of character for him and that she believes he was invited to the apartment.

"He is not that type of person. He's a good kid," she said. "That doesn't sound like him at all."

Woods, who was in the Wake County jail Wednesday afternoon under a $400,000 bond, has a criminal record dating to 2006 on several misdemeanor charges, including speeding, breaking and entering vehicles and hit and run.

None of the convictions are for violent crimes.
