— Police have arrested a Raleigh man who's accused of kidnapping and raping a woman over the weekend.

Investigators said Venable Lee Stewart, 45, of 420 Peyton St., was panhandling at a convenience store on Rock Quarry Road Saturday night when he approached the 21-year-old woman, jumped into her car, told her he had a gun and forced her to drive to a secluded area, where he raped her.

She was able to escape about 90 minutes after the man kidnapped her when she pulled into a store parking lot, jumped from her car and ran, police said. Stewart, they said, also ran from the scene.

He was arrested Tuesday night on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard while allegedly breaking into a car.

Police charged him with rape, kidnapping, sexual offense, attempted rape and armed robbery – all first-degree charges – in the Saturday incident.

Stewart also faces charges of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle, larceny and possession of drug paraphernalia in the car break-in.

He was in the Wake County jail Thursday under a $460,000 bond.

I don't see any pattern here yet. Does anyone else?

Yeah Massdaddy... that seems to be the trend. Then after a few years of that nice warm bad, cable TV, workout equipment, free college, air conditioning, three square meals, etc. we'll grant him parole so he can head right out and rape another.

What ever happened to these people. Just gone crazy. He needs to be locked up for life. What will he do next? Kill someone!!!! They need to start castrating these people and it will make the rest think twice before trying this again!!!!!

Instead of castrating him, we'll give him a nice warm bed, cable TV, workout equipment, free college, air conditioning, three square meals, etc.

"Either you're very young or don't know what you're talking about. Crime rate, across the board, is many times higher today than 50-60 years ago."

The total crime rate in 2010 was the lowest it has been since 1969. That is 43 years. The median age in the US is 37 years old. So yes, for the majority of people in the US, this is the safest it has been in their lifetime. Those stats don't even account for the low reporting rates of 40 years ago for things like sex crimes, fistfights etc. or "The War on Drugs".

"Actually, the US is the safest it has been in most of our lifetimes. The 24 hour per day reporting just means people see more of these stories."
