A Raleigh man was arrested Monday on charges that he was using counterfeit $20 bills to make purchases at a Walmart in Clayton, officials said Tuesday.

Corey Antwain Graves, 25, of 111 Crest Road, was charged with attempting to obtain property by false pretense. He was being held in the Johnston County jail under a $25,000 bond.

A manager of the Walmart at 805 Town Centre Blvd. called police at 9:30 p.m. and told officers that a man was trying to return items purchased earlier in the day with the phony bills, which all had the same serial number.

Police said two other people might be involved in the scheme. Also, they said, other counterfeit $20 bills with the same serial number had been used at a Walmart in Garner, and the two police departments are working together to investigate the case.

Clayton officials said any businesses that come across $20 bills with the serial number JL55720222D should call the Clayton Police Department at 919-553-4611.

Who could have known?

The pen is almost useless. The one dollar bill can be bleached and then have 20,50 or 100 $ printed on it and it will test correctly with the pen.

COOPER SHELDON COOPER January 22, 2013 4:23 p.m...................Because he's got the wrong last name... LOL

I thought most stores had a marker that would detect phony money. I use a cash machine and always get $20. When I spend the money they always use the marker.

Prozac...he was laundering. Bought it with fake cash with no intention of keeping it. When he returns the merchandise, he gets real cash in return.
