Raleigh leaders back smoking ban at major bus stops

Posted July 17, 2012

— The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday backed a policy that bans smoking at major Capital Area Transit bus stops.

Council members voted unanimously on the measure, which prohibits smoking within 25 feet of boarding platforms at downtown Raleigh's Moore Square Station as well as other bus stops where two or more buses stop.

No-smoking signs will be posted at all affected bus stops, including those at Triangle Town Center, Crabtree Valley Mall and the south Raleigh bus transfer area at Wilmington Street and Pecan Road.

The ban will take effect upon the City Council's approval of an ordinance concerning smoking at bus stops.

It's not clear when that will happen.

    Wow, are they for real?
    I agree with jjsmith1973's comment!
I can understand the ban of indoor smoking, but dang, you can't even smoke outside? And then 25 feet away....If I miss my bus, I'm going off!

Wow...it's good to see they're hard at work on the big problems. You might get shot at a bus stop but you won't get exposed to second hand smoke...smh.

Given the choice between banning smoking and banning illegal political mischief, I'd chose mischief. All this smoking rhetoric is just a smokescreen for the hijinks that the politicians are blowing in all our faces.

Yes, because the propane/natural gas, or diesel exhaust is so much better for you while standing next to a busy road with car and truck exhaust, while drinking you soda and eating that big Mac. Best keep that second hand smoke away. Good grief. Plus I agree does it state platform? I see a bunch of stops that are just a sign on the grassy shoulder.

    And yet another UN-enforceable stupidity.

yea, I second the 'good luck with that'. It's OUTSIDE for crying out loud. The smoking nazis have had their wishes with indoor places, and that's OK but banning smoking on public property outdoors is too much, sorry.

Are there plans to have shelters at all the stops? The stop at Brier Creek is out in the baking sun.

I'm ready for a ban in public spaces period.
