Raleigh Helping Hand Mission robbed of school supplies

Posted August 20, 2013

— Over the weekend, someone broke into Raleigh’s Helping Hand Mission and stole nearly 65 backpacks filled with school supplies.

Volunteers sorted through the supplies and backpacks to give away to needy children Tuesday and were short.

“It’s a school Grinch,” Sylvia Wiggins, Helping Hand Mission director said. “We have a school Grinch around here. I couldn’t believe it. We had prepared so much. As people had been dropping backpacks off, we have been packing them up and putting goodies in them. They’re just gone.”

When word of the theft spread several people in the community stepped up to replace the stolen items.

"fine upstanding teens I imagine, who just needed a backback OR SIXTY-FIVE!!!!!

how low can you go? this is nearing the bottom."

Hey I am sure the thief or thieves are POVERTY stricken and just took this stuff because they lack social justice.

I wonder where the Mission is selling these items.

beaupeep ... we are on the same page. Maybe it's time WRAL investigates this....???

AGAIN??? Every year this charity gets "robbed" right before the holidays and back to school of donations. It's time someone gives them a secure storage locker in a secure facility to hold the donations. Seems awfully suspicious that they continue to store goods in the same place that gets broken into each year. Come on. Wake up! Donate to the Salvation Army instead... I'm beginning to think this is a corrupt charity.

The Helping Hand Mission does great work. This is pretty awful that someone would do this.

"Someone, please, buy this group an alarm system. They are always being broken into."

    Yeah, quite the coincidence, no?

These are the types of people who would rob an 8 year old's lemonade stand.
