RALEIGH, N.C. — Over the weekend, someone broke into Raleigh’s Helping Hand Mission and stole nearly 65 backpacks filled with school supplies.

Volunteers sorted through the supplies and backpacks to give away to needy children Tuesday and were short.

“It’s a school Grinch,” Sylvia Wiggins, Helping Hand Mission director said. “We have a school Grinch around here. I couldn’t believe it. We had prepared so much. As people had been dropping backpacks off, we have been packing them up and putting goodies in them. They’re just gone.”

When word of the theft spread several people in the community stepped up to replace the stolen items.
