Raleigh becomes 45th largest city
Raleigh's population has cleared the 400,000 plateau, the city said Tuesday, citing the U.S. Census Bureau’s annual estimates for resident population.

Raleigh first posted six figures in population in the 1960s and grew to 122, 830 by 1970. It steadily climbed above 300,000 in 2002 with an estimate of 306,252.
Charlotte is the only other North Carolina city among the nation's 50 largest, coming in at No. 18 with 709,441 residents.
Elsewhere, the Nashville-Davidson County metropolitan area in Tennessee came in 25th with a population of 605,473. Atlanta came in 33rd with a population of 540,921, and Virginia Beach came in 41st with a population of 433,575.
