Rains Produce Sewage Spill in Rocky Mount

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — City officials blamed nearly 3.5 inches of rain over three days for an overflow that spilled 9,500 gallons of raw sewage from two manholes on Johnson Street.

The spill, reported Saturday, pushed about 900 gallons of sewage into Cokey Swamp, officials said.

High water levels from the rain helped dilute the sewage, however, and officials said tests showed no impact on dissolved oxygen and pH levels, two measurements of water quality.

Tests for fecal coliform bacteria were being processed Monday, they reported.
