LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Raeford man was charged late Wednesday with killing his mother and another woman in February during a domestic dispute.

Joseph Kelly Matteson, 31, of 2675 Calloway Road, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and breaking and entering. He was being held without bond in the Robeson County jail.

Matteson's mother, Donna Matteson, 55, was found dead outside a home at 12156 N.C. Highway 211 West in Red Springs on Feb. 13, and Kathy Bullard, 59,was found dead inside, authorities said.

Authorities said that Kendra Matteson had called 911 to report that Joseph Matteson, her estranged husband, was outside the house with a handgun threatening to kill her.

Kendra Matteson had been staying with Bullard and used to date her son, Mark Anthony Bullard, authorities said.

When deputies arrived, Mark Bullard, 28, was found with a gunshot wound to the hand, and Joseph Matteson was lying on the roadside with severe head injuries. Authorities said a neighbor beat Joseph Mattson to end the shooting spree.

Kendra Matteson suffered minor injuries in the incident, but neither of her children, ages 9 and 1, was hurt.

Joseph Matteson had been hospitalized but was charged upon his release.
