RAEFORD, N.C. — A 79-year-old man died in a single-vehicle wreck on N.C. Highway 20, a couple miles southeast of Raeford, Saturday evening, according to state troopers.

Troopers said John William Butler, of 1136 Golf Course Road, was driving southeast on N.C. 20 around 8:30 p.m. when his 1993 Ford pickup truck went off the road in a curve and struck a tree.

Butler was transported to a hospital and died of his injuries. His passenger, Bessie McMillian, 42, of 351 White Oak Drive, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals after being ejected from the truck, according to troopers. She was expected to survive.

Speed did not appear to be a factor, authorities said.
