Rabid fox bites two in Wayne Co.

Wayne County health officials warned residents in the Grantham area Tuesday to be on the lookout for unusual behavior in pets or wild animals after a rabid fox bit two people there.

WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. — Wayne County health officials warned residents in the Grantham area Tuesday to be on the lookout for unusual behavior in pets or wild animals after a rabid fox bit two people there.

The fox was caught on Birch Street on April 23. 

Residents were advised to watch for the following behaviors:

  • Animals that normally come out at night venturing out in daylight hours
  • Staggering animals
  • Animals that have wetness or are drooling around the mouth
  • Animals that do not fear people, even in the presence of loud or frightening noises
  • Aggressive or sickly animals

Anyone who spots an animal exhibiting strange behavior is asked to call Wayne County Animal Control at 919-731-1439.
