Property dispute creates roundabout roadblock

Posted November 24, 2008

— Several property owners along Hillsborough Street have balked at city plans to purchase bits of their property to create roundabouts on the thoroughfare.

The dispute, which involves three businesses and two residences, is the latest roadblock in the effort to update the look of Hillsborough Street and make it more pedestrian friendly.

Local voters approved the roundabouts three years ago as part of a $60 million bond referendum for road improvements. The City Council has debated the details of the project ever since.

The council has given city officials authority to condemn the land needed for the roundabouts to keep the project moving forward. There was no word on when any legal action might occur.

Living in Cameron Village, I seem to travel down Hillsborough on a daily basis. I would love to have the street more pedestrian friendly for two reasons. I both drive on & walk on Hillsborough, and it's dangerous for both.

I wonder, though, what businesses & residences are slated for being demolished…
