RALEIGH, N.C. — Several property owners along Hillsborough Street have balked at city plans to purchase bits of their property to create roundabouts on the thoroughfare.

The dispute, which involves three businesses and two residences, is the latest roadblock in the effort to update the look of Hillsborough Street and make it more pedestrian friendly.

Local voters approved the roundabouts three years ago as part of a $60 million bond referendum for road improvements. The City Council has debated the details of the project ever since.

The council has given city officials authority to condemn the land needed for the roundabouts to keep the project moving forward. There was no word on when any legal action might occur.
