LAURINBURG, N.C. — Police said Friday that a woman whose remains were found buried in Laurinburg on Tuesday had been strangled.

Officers found the decomposed body of Christy Lynn Russell, 24, of Sneads Grove Road in Laurinburg, buried in a mound of dirt near Caledonia Road. A nearby resident concerned about a foul odor notified police, prompting the search for and discovery of the body.

Russell's remains were sent to the medical examiner's office in Charlotte for a positive identification and to determine the cause of death. An autopsy determined that she had been strangled.

The State Bureau of Investigation is working with the Laurinburg Police Department on the case, but no arrests have been made.
