Police: SouthWest Edgecombe football coach involved in hit-and-run crash, left scene

SouthWest Edgecombe High School football coach Carter Varnell was arrested and charged Saturday morning around 4:30 in Wilson.

WILSON, N.C. — The head football coach at SouthWest Edgecombe High School is facing charges for his alleged role in a hit-and-run crash from over the weekend in Wilson.

Carter Varnell was arrested and charged around 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers found a green Toyota Sequoia with significant damage on Jetstream Drive, noticing that debris from the crash led to a home on Sabre Lane. Officers then discovered a gold Dodge Ram that appeared to be the other vehicle involved. Varnell was seen running from the truck.

A Wilson police report notes that Varnell was driving down Jetstream Drive and collided with a parked vehicle. Varnell then left the scene of the crash.

Varnell, 31, was charged with one count of misdemeanor hit and run, one count of misdemeanor careless and reckless driving and one count of resist, obstruct and delay. He was given a $1,000 secured bond.

Varnell was named head coach at SouthWest Edgecombe in 2020. Edgecombe County Schools did not return a request for comment from WRAL News. Varnell did not offer any comment when contacted by WRAL News.

The arrest occurred hours after SouthWest Edgecombe defeated North Edgecombe 47-0 in the first game of the season.

Varnell is also a physical education teacher at the school.
