FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police on Wednesday ruled the shooting of a woman in the head on the All American Expressway in Fayetteville Monday was a suicide.

Frances Marie Del Valle Sanchez, 21, and her ex-husband were traveling south on the freeway in a black GMC Yukon when they got into a minor wreck, spun out of control and ended up in the median, police said.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Sanchez lying outside the vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head. She died Tuesday evening at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

According to preliminary evidence, witness interviews and initial findings from the medical examiner, police said in a statement, "it appears as if Ms. Sanchez died as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

No charges have been filed, but authorities are still awaiting the final results of an autopsy.

Her ex-husband, a Fort Bragg soldier whose name has not been released, was driving the Yukon, police said. He was taken into custody for questioning Monday, but was later released.
