FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — Police said Wednesday that they have determined a weekend shooting that injured a Fuquay-Varina High School graduate was an accident.

Officers found Adrian Kyree Evans, 18, in the parking lot of the Cook-Out restaurant, 1433 N. Main St. at about 2 a.m. Saturday. He had been shot in the lower back and was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment.

Investigators interviewed Evans and witnesses to the shooting, consulted with the Wake County District Attorney's Office and decided not to file charges in the case, Fuquay-Varina Police Chief Larry Smith said.

Evans was with a group of people, and one of them was carrying a shotgun that accidentally discharged, Smith said.

Evans played football and basketball at Fuquay-Varina High before graduating last year.
