Police seek woman in identity-theft case

— Police on Tuesday were trying to identify a woman wanted on identity-theft charges.

The woman has been using the identification of a woman named Ebet Cortez from Texas. Cortez recently discovered the fraud when she applied for health insurance.

In the past four years, the woman has used Cortez’s identification to obtain jobs at Whole Foods, Dewhit Inc. and the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in the Durham area. The woman is wanted on three counts of identity theft.

    I hope the real Ms. Cortez gets her life back. I had an "undocumented" worker use my son's social security number. He was 7 and I got wind of it when he received a nasty note from the IRS demanding he file taxes for his 23K in earnings. Not bad for a 2nd grader. I straightened it out, the IRS said it "happens all the time". Oh, but this is not a problem.
