KINSTON, N.C. — Kinston police said Thursday they have made an arrest in a shooting that happened earlier this month.

Mario Devon King, 26, of Kinston, is charged with attempted murder. He was taken into custody Wednesday by members of the violent fugitive task force of the U.S. Marshal’s Service. Police said King is a known gang member with an extensive violent criminal history, and he was recently on parole.

King is accused of shooting 45-year-old Bernard Whitfield on May 4. Whitfield was found in the street in the 2100 block of Viking Drive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was treated at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

King was held at the Lenoir County jail under a $2 million bond. Police said there could be additional arrests in the case.
