— Durham police Thursday identified a man killed in a shooting on Liberty Street.

Responding officers found the victim lying on the sidewalk near the corner of Liberty and Elm streets Wednesday night. Sean Kali Buwe, 18, of Sima Street, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to witnesses, Buwe was walking on Liberty Street when a man in dark clothing got out of a burgundy van or SUV, walked up behind Buwe and shot him. Witnesses said the shooter then fled in the vehicle, which was driven by another person.

Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Jack Cates at 560-4440, ext. 262 or Crime Stoppers at 683-1200. Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases and callers never have to identify themselves.

"I'll try this again. The young man Sean Kali Buwe has no adult criminal record in the state of NC. Chances are, he is just a victim of his surroundings. All it takes is just to stand up to the wrong person."

Try looking at his juvenile record. He's been charged with 12 robberies. Some of them armed robberies and some strong arm robberies. He's also been involved in slinging rock on the corners.

This is a sad situation no matter what his background. Someone has lost a son and you guys are concerned with the publicity, or, lack of, instead of the fact that this kid is dead.

"I'm sure the life he was living led to his demise...."

Where on earth do we get the notions that some people are worthy of murder and others aren't? This man could have been volunteering to tutor some kids, doing some community service activity for a fraternity, or simply walking to a friend's home minding his own business. Regardless of his lifestyle, no one deserves to die like that.

People who are continually in the public's eye will obviously recieve more attention if murdered than the average Joe, regardless of race. Its that simple.

it's not going to get the same coverage as other stories, and I don't feel that it warrants it, he probably got caught up with the wrong people, they say he was from sima ave, that's mcdougald terrace in durham... which is a bad neighborhood, and liberty and elm is no better, it's unfortunate of course that he lost his life but, I'm sure the life he was living led to his demise.... and like the other post said, if he turns out to be student body pres for NCCU, it'll get attention...
