DURHAM, N.C. — Police on Wednesday identified a man who was killed by a freight train in Durham last month.

Luis Ayala Ortega, 40, was sitting on the tracks on Hillsborough Road near Main Street on May 23 when he was struck by a Norfolk Southern train.

Investigators said there was no indication that the train was speeding, and witnesses told investigators that Ortega didn't move when the train's whistle sounded.

Ortega was homeless, police said, and they are trying to locate relatives.

Anyone with information about Ortega’s relatives is asked to call the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4440, extension 29322.
