Police find phones, gin but no gun at Raleigh home where man was shot

A search of a Raleigh home where a man was shot and killed Nov. 14 yielded DNA evidence, three cellphones, cigarette butts and two bottles of gin. Police gathered the evidence as they investigated the death of James Dermont Rowland, 48.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A search of a Raleigh home where a man was shot and killed Nov. 14 yielded DNA evidence, three cellphones, cigarette butts and two bottles of gin. Police gathered the evidence as they investigated the death of James Dermont Rowland, 48.

A resident of 213 S. Tarboro St. called police that evening to report an injured person. The man told officers he had come home from work around 7 p.m. to find his uncle bleeding from the head, according to the search warrant.

That uncle, Rowland, was taken to WakeMed where he died.

Police did not find a gun in the home, and they have not identified any suspects or motive in the crime.
