Police chase ends in Raleigh wreck

The driver tried to escape on foot after the crash, but he was taken into custody at a nearby self-storage facility, police said.

The incident started when Garner police tried to stop a speeding car that had hit some mailboxes, police said. The chase went from U.S. Highway 70 to Interstates 40 and 440 before police lost him on Poole Road.

Wake County deputies then joined in pursuit, and the chase ended at the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Freedom Drive, where the fleeing car hit another car, an SUV and a garbage truck, police said.

Several people were injured and were taken to WakeMed, but their conditions weren't known.

Deputies used a K-9 to track the driver to a StorKwik at 5012 New Bern Ave., about a half-mile away, where they apprehended him.

"I was out here cleaning and I hear, 'Get on the ground,' and I look up and I see sheriffs with their guns pulled and this guy," StorKwik employee Chanel Marshall said. "I didn’t see that they had him on the ground till I ran inside (and) locked all the doors."

Reginald Tyrone Massey, 27, was charged with felony speeding to elude, possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana and maintaining a vehicle for the sale of drugs. Police said other charges are pending in both Garner and Raleigh.

The wreck caused eastbound traffic to back up on New Bern Avenue, as police closed three lanes during their investigation.
